Warning regarding Tayfun Kahraman and Murat Çalık: 'If a death occurs,' CHP's Emir says, 'the Republic will be crushed under it'

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir brought the situations of Tayfun Kahraman, who is imprisoned in the Gezi Park trial and struggling with health issues, and imprisoned Beylikdüzü Mayor Murat Çalık to the agenda in Parliament. In his speech at the General Assembly, Emir said, 'What is being done to these individuals is clearly unlawful, a violation of the law, and an abandonment of humanity. This is a crime against humanity, and if, God forbid, a death occurs there, the Republic of Turkey will be crushed under the weight of it.'

'INHUMANE'

Addressing the decision-makers regarding Kahraman and Çalık, Emir stated, 'Do not get involved in these matters just because an order or instruction has come; grant the patients their rights and ensure they receive the treatment they require. Keeping these individuals in prison cells for even one more minute is clearly unlawful and an inhumane practice.'

'CONSTITUTES THE CRIME OF TORTURE'

Reminding that Tayfun Kahraman suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS) and that this disease is painful, Emir also noted that Kahraman was subjected to mistreatment while being taken to the hospital, stating that this situation falls under the crime of torture.

Regarding Murat Çalık's situation, Emir said, 'He lost 15 kilos in Buca Prison in İzmir; he withered away before our very eyes.' Expressing that the illness might be recurring, Emir called out, 'At the very least, take this person and monitor him in a protected university hospital under prison conditions.'
