Labor unions and Ministry to discuss minimum wage mid-year hike in Geneva! 'A mini-summit will be held'
As debates over a mid-year minimum wage hike continue, a notable claim has emerged. It has been reported that Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan will travel to Geneva for the 112th International Labour Conference (ILO) of the UN's International Labour Organization, where a mini-meeting will be held regarding the demands of labor and employer unions concerning the minimum wage.
A notable claim regarding the debates on a mid-year minimum wage hike, which millions of citizens are awaiting, has come from Sözcü columnist Saygı Öztürk.
Stating that Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan will travel to Geneva for the UN International Labour Organization's 112th International Labour Conference (ILO), Öztürk said that a mini-meeting will be held in Geneva, which will also be attended by Türk-İş President Ergün Atalay, the Hak-İş President, DİSK officials, and representatives of employer unions.
Stating that Türk-İş is preparing seriously for the meeting in question, Öztürk said, "They had requested that the minimum wage be at least 18,000 TL and had a demand for it to be determined twice a year. We will see what will have changed after 7 months. The issue of a minimum wage hike may have been discussed in Kızılcahamam, but Türk-İş also has a demand on behalf of the workers. We will see how effective it will be."
WILL THERE BE A MID-YEAR MINIMUM WAGE HIKE?
Responding to the question "Will there be a mid-year minimum wage hike?", Öztürk used the following expressions:
"The figures are clear; the minimum wage was 17,000 TL, but there is a loss of about 3,000 TL due to inflation. Annual inflation came out at the 75 percent level. There is also a loss for the 6 million employees earning minimum wage. This needs to be taken into consideration."
