Poverty line triples the minimum wage: Hunger threshold is well above the minimum!

The United Public Workers Confederation announced that in April, the hunger threshold decreased by 208 liras to 19 thousand 980 liras due to seasonal declines in vegetable prices, while the poverty line increased by 925 liras to 58 thousand 205 liras.

In the first four months of the year, the hunger threshold increased by 3 thousand 403 liras, and the poverty line increased by 11 thousand 368 liras.

NON-FOOD EXPENDITURES EXCEEDED 2 MINIMUM WAGES

The United Public Workers Confederation announced the April 2024 results of its hunger and poverty threshold research, calculated by its R&D unit KAMU-AR, taking into account the expenditures a four-person family must make to consume a balanced and healthy diet, as well as to meet their other needs in a way that is worthy of human dignity and without feeling deprivation.

While the hunger threshold decreased by 208 liras in April compared to the previous month, the expenditure required for non-food needs increased by 1,134 liras to 38 thousand 316 liras. The poverty line, which consists of the sum of both, increased by 925 liras compared to the previous month. Over the last year, the hunger threshold recorded an increase of 8 thousand 258 liras, the expenditure required for non-food needs increased by 19 thousand 318 liras, and the poverty line recorded an increase of 27 thousand 575 liras.

According to prices compiled from the most frequented markets in Ankara, the monthly amount that needs to be spent on meat, fish, and eggs to maintain a balanced diet increased by 257 liras compared to the previous month and by 2 thousand 532 liras annually, reaching 5 thousand 997 liras.

The expenditure required for dried legumes increased by 11 liras compared to the previous month and by 173 liras compared to the same month last year, rising to 422 liras.
