TurkStat released 2023 income distribution statistics: the rich got richer, the poor got poorer

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has released its "income distribution statistics" for 2023.

According to the results of the latest survey, the share of total income received by the top 20% group with the highest equivalized household disposable income increased by 1.8 percentage points compared to the previous year, reaching 49.8%, while the share received by the bottom 20% group with the lowest income decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.9%.

Annual average household disposable income was 167 thousand 983 TL

According to the 2023 survey results, the annual average household disposable income in Turkey increased by 70.7% to 167 thousand 983 TL.

The annual average equivalized household disposable income per capita was 83 thousand 808 TL.

In Turkey, the annual average equivalized household disposable income per capita increased by 72.3% compared to the previous year, rising from 48 thousand 642 TL to 83 thousand 808 TL.

HOUSEHOLD INCOME INCREASED COMPARED TO LAST YEAR

Regarding annual average equivalized household disposable income per capita, the highest income was recorded for single-person households at 100 thousand 076 TL, an increase of 37 thousand 522 TL compared to the previous year. While the annual average equivalized household disposable income per capita for households consisting of multiple people without a nuclear family was 99 thousand 916 TL, this value was 85 thousand 758 TL for households consisting of a single nuclear family. The household type with the lowest annual average equivalized disposable household income per capita was households consisting of at least one nuclear family and other persons, at 66 thousand 001 TL.

Within the total income, the highest share was held by wages and salaries at 48.5%, an increase of 2.3 percentage points compared to the previous year. Entrepreneurial income took second place at 22.1%, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year, while social transfer income took third place at 17.6%, showing a decrease of 2.6 percentage points compared to the previous year.

GINI COEFFICIENT INCREASED

The Gini coefficient, one of the measures of income inequality, which indicates equality in income distribution as it approaches zero and deterioration in income distribution as it approaches 1, was estimated at 0.433 in 2023, an increase of 0.018 points compared to the previous year.
