Union announces: New hunger and poverty thresholds determined

According to the hunger and poverty threshold research announced by the United Public Workers Confederation's (Birleşik Kamu-İş) R&D unit, KAMU-AR, in July, the hunger threshold increased by 202 lira compared to the previous month, reaching 20,776 lira, while the poverty threshold rose to 62,302 lira.

The United Public Workers Confederation's R&D unit, KAMU-AR, published its July data for the hunger-poverty threshold research, which is calculated by taking into account the food consumption required for a family of four to have a balanced and healthy diet, as well as the expenditures necessary to meet other needs without feeling deprived.

Accordingly, while the hunger threshold rose by 202 lira in July compared to the previous month to 20,776 lira, the poverty threshold also increased by 885 lira to 62,302 lira. In the first seven months of the year, the hunger threshold increased by 4,293 lira, and the poverty threshold increased by 15,465 lira.

Based on prices compiled from the most frequented markets in Ankara, the monthly expenditure required for meat, fish, and eggs to maintain a balanced diet increased by 26 lira in July compared to the previous month, and by 2,449 lira annually, reaching 5,995 lira.

Expenditures for milk, yogurt, and cheese, which rose by 28 lira compared to the previous month to 4,652 lira, saw an increase of 1,817 lira over the last year. While the money required for fruit decreased by 113 lira in July compared to the previous month, it fell to 1,975 lira, an increase of 835 lira compared to the same month last year; the amount required for vegetables increased by 47 lira compared to the previous month and by 645 lira compared to the same month last year, reaching 2,420 lira.

INCREASED BY 4,293 TL IN 7 MONTHS

Expenditures for products such as bread, flour, and pasta increased by 124 lira to 1,749 lira, while expenditures for rice and bulgur increased by 9 lira to 835 lira.

Expenditures for oil rose to 572 lira. Expenditures for food items such as sugar, honey, molasses, and jam increased by 67 lira compared to the previous month to 1,400 lira. The expenditure required for olives for the same family remained unchanged at 746 lira. According to calculations based on 2,800 calories for an adult male, 2,200 for a woman, 3,000 for a youth, and 1,600 for a child, the hunger threshold in July was 6,066 lira for an adult male, 4,762 lira for an adult woman, 3,458 lira for a child, and 6,491 lira for a youth. The hunger threshold recorded a total increase of 4,293 lira in the first seven months of this year.

NON-FOOD EXPENDITURES

According to the research, which also takes into account price changes in non-food requirements to determine the poverty threshold, the amount of expenditure required for a family of four to meet their non-food needs "without feeling deprived" rose to 41,526 lira in July.

In July, clothing and footwear expenditures for four people fell to 1,945 lira, while housing (including rent) expenditures were 9,865 lira, household goods expenditures were 5,287 lira, and health expenditures were 1,703 lira.

Transportation expenditures fell to 12,450 lira. Communication expenditures rose to 1,317 lira, entertainment and culture expenditures to 1,237 lira, education expenditures to 918 lira, holiday-hotel expenditures to 4,569 lira, and expenditures related to various goods and services rose to 2,235 lira. Non-food expenditures showed an increase of 11,172 lira in the first seven months of this year.
