Amazon's mysterious Massaco community filmed for the first time

In the Brazilian portion of the Amazon rainforest, automated cameras have captured an isolated community known as the Massaco. This community, which has no contact with the outside world, continues to exist despite environmental threats. Although the community takes its name from the river that runs through its territory, their language, beliefs, and true names remain a secret.

THEIR POPULATION IS GROWING

According to FUNAI data, the population of the Massaco community, which was estimated to be around 100 people in the 1990s, has reached 200-250 people today. The identity of the community, which is said to bear similarities to the Sirionó people in Brazil and Bolivia, has yet to be definitively confirmed.

'THEY SET TRAPS FOR PROTECTION'

As reported by Sözcü from The Guardian, the community moves through the forest according to the seasons and sets piercing traps on the ground to keep strangers away. They also demonstrate superior skills in the forest by hunting with bows that reach 3 meters in length.

THEY ARE RESISTING DESPITE ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURE

Activities such as agriculture, mining, and drug trafficking pose a serious threat to the Massaco community. However, satellite imagery reveals that despite these pressures, the community is expanding its agricultural fields and growing its structures.

DEFENDING THEIR RIGHTS IS BECOMING DIFFICULT

According to the Brazilian constitution, the existence of isolated communities must be proven in order to protect their rights. However, economic interest groups in the region choose to ignore their rights by denying the existence of these communities.
