Algal density in the sea draws attention as temperatures rise in Istanbul

With the rise in air temperatures, the density of algae in the sea in the district has drawn attention.

In some areas, the color of the sea was seen to turn red and yellow, and the color change was also captured by drone.

THE REASON HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED

Istanbul University Faculty of Aquatic Sciences faculty member Prof. Dr. Meriç Albay stated that the change in sea color in Büyükçekmece could be caused by a local waste input.

Prof. Albay noted that as water temperatures rise, combined with pollution sources (nutrient salts such as nitrogen and phosphorus), an increase in algae occurs.

Boat owner Murat Kömürcü expressed that he had not encountered such a situation before and that the sight was worrying.
