Dam occupancy rates in Istanbul are sounding the alarm
The occupancy rate of Istanbul's water resources has dropped to 58.28 percent. Heat waves experienced during the summer months have caused water levels to decrease.
According to data provided by the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ), the occupancy rate of the dams meeting Istanbul's water needs has been determined to be 58.28 percent. The occupancy rate, which rose to 81.23 percent in April thanks to spring rains, has declined significantly with the scorching heat of summer.
When examining the occupancy rates of the dams, an occupancy rate of 61.16 percent was recorded in Ömerli Dam, 67.47 percent in Darlık Dam, 74.29 percent in Elmalı Dam, 61.72 percent in Terkos Dam, 41.78 percent in Alibey Dam, 55.2 percent in Büyükçekmece Dam, 46.11 percent in Sazlıdere Dam, 29.97 percent in Istrancalar Dam, 53.88 percent in Kazandere Dam, and 53.61 percent in Pabuçdere Dam.
While the total capacity of the dams and ponds meeting Istanbul's water needs is calculated at 868 million 683 thousand cubic meters, the current amount of water has fallen to the level of 505.79 million cubic meters. As of yesterday, the amount of water supplied to Istanbul was announced as 3 million 585 thousand cubic meters. These data once again reveal that water resources must be managed carefully.
