Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan commented on social media regarding the earthquakes that occurred in the Doğanşehir district of Malatya and the Hemşin district of Rize.
WHY DID THE DOĞANŞEHİR EARTHQUAKE OCCUR?
Regarding the earthquake in Malatya's Doğanşehir, Ercan stated, "The M4.9 earthquake in Malatya is an aftershock. Earthquakes of this magnitude are not destructive within a 200 km radius and will continue until 2028."
WHY DID THE RİZE HEMŞİN EARTHQUAKE OCCUR?
Prof. Dr. Ercan also commented on the earthquake in the Hemşin district of Rize with the following words:
"The M4.8 earthquake in Rize's Çamlıhemşin occurred on a local, secondary fault that produces hot springs. I do not expect a major earthquake to follow. Rize is one of the safest provinces."
The earthquake that occurred in Rize was also felt in surrounding provinces.
It was noted that the earthquake was felt in Trabzon, Artvin, Erzurum, and Bayburt, in addition to Rize.
