Lawyer announces: Murat Çalık’s infection risk continues

New developments have been shared regarding the health status of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık. Çalık’s lawyer, Melih Koçhan, stated in a social media post that his client had undergone a second surgical operation, that the wound had not yet closed following the surgery, and that the stitches had not been removed. Koçhan argued that the surgical site is susceptible to infection and that current prison conditions threaten Çalık’s right to health.

Noting that Çalık’s immune system is weak due to his history of leukemia and lymphoma, Koçhan said, "My client, Mehmet Murat Çalık, recently underwent a second surgical operation on his neck. The stitches in the operation area have not yet been removed, wound healing is not complete, and the area is susceptible to infection. As a result of comprehensive examinations previously conducted by Katip Çelebi University Hospital, a medical board report prepared with the participation of relevant specialist physicians included a medical assessment stating that, due to the leukemia and lymphoma diseases the client has had in the past, he may be more sensitive to infections in terms of his immune system; therefore, prison conditions could increase the risk of infection."

After Çalık applied to the prison infirmary due to swelling and discharge that increased in the evening, an examination by emergency service teams determined that the risk of infection persists and a decision was made to transfer him to a hospital. In Koçhan’s statement, it was noted that while the compatibility of current medical records with Katip Çelebi University Hospital, where his treatment is being managed, is important for the continuity of the treatment process, his referral to İzmir City Hospital has created uncertainty.

It was stated that following the emergency intervention, Çalık’s previous medical examinations and history were not considered in a holistic manner, and that the report provided by İzmir City Hospital did not address the risk analysis in the Katip Çelebi University Hospital report. Lawyer Melih Koçhan said, "The failure to consider the existing medical data regarding the same patient together creates an objective uncertainty in terms of the principles of continuity and integrity in healthcare services. As clearly emphasized in Constitutional Court decisions, for the health status of individuals under the supervision of public authority, immediate intervention alone is not sufficient; the person’s medical history, existing risk factors, and the continuity of the treatment process must be taken into account and followed up in a regular and effective manner. This obligation is even more important for individuals who have a risk of infection and are sensitive in terms of their immune system. It is clear that in the transfer and treatment process of a patient whose operation area is open and whose risk of infection continues, their medical history and risk factors must be evaluated in a holistic manner."

Çalık’s lawyer also stated that they are closely monitoring his client’s health and will take all necessary legal steps to protect his vital rights.
