Schools have opened, summer is over: Here are ways to strengthen children's immune systems

The 2024-25 academic year began on Monday.

As 20 million students head back to school and September arrives, air temperatures in many cities have begun to return to seasonal norms.

Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Fikret İşbilir issued notable warnings regarding how to strengthen children's immune systems.

VITAMINS C, E, ZINC AND IRON

Stating that a balanced diet is the foundation of a healthy immune system, Dr. İşbilir said, "Children's consumption of fruits and vegetables should be increased. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals that support immunity, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc, and iron, are of great importance for children's health."

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Emphasizing that regular physical activity positively affects children's immune systems, Dr. İşbilir stated, "Children need to engage in physical activity for at least one hour a day. This is essential for both physical and mental development."

SLEEP

Noting that sleep patterns also directly affect the immune system, Dr. Fikret İşbilir warned, "Preschool children should sleep 10-13 hours a day, and school-age children should sleep 9-11 hours. Insufficient sleep weakens immunity, leaving children vulnerable to illnesses."

STRESS

Drawing attention to the negative effects of stress on children's immune systems, Dr. İşbilir said, "It is important to set aside regular times for relaxation and unwinding for children. Family activities can help reduce stress and help children stay healthier."

BALANCED DIET

Dr. Fikret İşbilir pointed out that there are four fundamental elements to strengthening the immune system in children, stating that these are a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and effective stress management. He expressed that parents can support their children's health by paying attention to these elements.
