Summer warning for hypertension patients: Beware of blood pressure fluctuations in extreme heat
Cardiologist Dr. Doğaç Çağlar Gürbüz issued warnings regarding fluid loss, improper cooling methods, and medication dosages during hot and humid weather.
Extreme heat and high humidity increase the risk of sudden drops and fluctuations in blood pressure, especially for hypertension patients. Dr. Doğaç Çağlar Gürbüz, a cardiologist at Acıbadem Taksim Hospital, stated that blood pressure control should not be neglected during the summer months and provided important warnings.
Reminding that one in every 3 adults in Turkey is a hypertension patient, Gürbüz pointed out that there is a large segment of the population that has not been diagnosed and is unaware of their condition. Emphasizing that hypertension is therefore called the "silent killer," Gürbüz stated that monitoring blood pressure in hot weather is of vital importance.
Neglecting blood pressure control, especially in this extreme heat, can lead to vital problems such as fainting, rhythm disorders, kidney failure, heart attack, and even stroke.
WHY DOES BLOOD PRESSURE FLUCTUATE IN THE HEAT?
According to Dr. Gürbüz, hot weather increases the loss of water and minerals through sweating while also causing blood vessels to dilate. This situation can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure in some patients and fluctuations in others. The effect of fluid loss can become more pronounced, especially in patients using diuretic medications.

Experts recommend that hypertension patients reorganize their daily routines during hot days and consult their physicians before making any changes to their medication dosages on their own. Gürbüz pointed out that stopping measurements, especially during holiday periods with the thought that "I feel fine," is a significant mistake.
10 SUMMER TIPS FROM AN EXPERT
- 1. Increase water consumption. Take in enough fluids throughout the day without waiting to feel thirsty; if you have heart failure or kidney disease, determine the amount with your physician.
- 2. Be careful with diuretic medications. Since fluid loss increases with sweating in the summer months, consult your cardiologist regarding medication dosages.
- 3. If possible, do not go out between 11:00 and 16:00. In cases of necessity, prefer shaded areas and use a wide-brimmed hat.
- 4. Lighten your diet. Instead of overly salty, fatty, and fried foods, prefer dishes with olive oil, vegetables, fruits, and light grilled items.
- 5. Avoid cold showers. Ice-cold water can cause sudden constriction in blood vessels, which may raise blood pressure; take lukewarm showers to cool down.
- 6. Protect yourself from sudden temperature differences when switching to air conditioning. Keep the air conditioner temperature around 22-24 degrees and do not expose yourself directly to the air from the unit.
- 7. Shift exercise to cooler hours. Perform activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling early in the morning or in the evening.
- 8. Limit tea and coffee, and avoid alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol can increase fluid loss and trigger heart rate increases and blood pressure spikes.
- 9. Pay attention to your choice of clothing. Light-colored, loose, cotton, or linen clothing helps the body maintain its heat balance.
- 10. Do not neglect your blood pressure measurements and doctor check-ups. Note down your values; consult your physician in case of persistent low or high readings.
Gürbüz stated that some habits preferred for cooling down in the summer months can also create risks. Ice-cold showers, sudden entry into very cold air-conditioned environments, and exercise performed during hot hours can strain the vascular system and pave the way for blood pressure spikes.
Hypertension patients need to take symptoms such as dizziness, feeling of fainting, palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden changes in blood pressure seriously during periods of hot weather. It is recommended to apply to a healthcare institution without delay when these symptoms are observed.
