That baby formula spread poison: 13 babies hospitalized

Federal and state health authorities in the US are investigating 13 cases of botulism across 10 states linked to a recalled baby formula. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that two batches of Whole Nutrition Infant Formula produced by ByHeart Inc. have been recalled.

The states where babies who consumed this formula were hospitalized include Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. No deaths have been reported so far.

The FDA stated that it is investigating the source of the contamination and whether other products have been affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the product in question was sold online and through major retailers, accounting for approximately 1% of national formula sales.

The CDC recommended that individuals who purchased the recalled formula record the batch number before discarding or returning the product. It was also noted that surfaces that came into contact with the formula should be cleaned with a dishwasher or hot soapy water.

It was emphasized that immediate medical attention should be sought if babies who consumed the recalled formula exhibit symptoms such as poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or a decrease in facial expression.

ABOUT INFANT BOTULISM

Infant botulism is a disease caused by a bacterium that produces toxins in the large intestine. The CDC stated that it may take weeks for symptoms to appear and that parents should be vigilant regarding this matter.
