Application filed for the release of Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan
The lawyer for Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan has filed an application for his client's release. Lawyer Hüseyin Ersöz stated that they expect a decision within this week.
With CHP's Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan entering his sixth month of detention, his lawyer Hüseyin Ersöz has filed a request for his release. Ersöz stated that the fact that the indictment against Şahan has not yet been written makes his continued detention disproportionate.
Citing European Court of Human Rights rulings, Ersöz reminded that his client served as a bureaucrat for many years in the Beylikdüzü and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipalities before being elected Mayor of Şişli in 2024.
Stating that it is normal for him to have had phone conversations with many people during this process, Ersöz emphasized that interpreting these conversations as aiding a terrorist organization is legally unacceptable.
The lawyer also stated that the statements of secret witnesses were manipulative and far from reality, noting that these statements were based on social media posts and that a criminal complaint had been filed regarding those posts. Ersöz expressed that his client holds Atatürkist values and stands against terrorist organizations.
Stating that they also included examples such as the release of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the Constitutional Court's Hüda Kaya ruling in their petition, Ersöz argued that Şahan's detention is no longer a proportionate measure.
Finally, Ersöz said, "We expect the review of the detention status of Resul Emrah Şahan to be conducted this week and a decision to be made regarding our request for release."
