Hadi al-Bahra, President of the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces (SMDK), announced in a statement on his X social media account that 73-year-old Muhammed Faris passed away on Friday in Turkey.

Noting that Faris had won the affection of Syrians through his courageous stance and by listening to the voice of the people, Bahra pointed out that Faris was a "bright name at both the local and international levels as the first Syrian and second Arab to go to space."

Bahra extended his condolences to Faris's family, relatives, and the entire Syrian people.

HE WAS THE FIRST SYRIAN TO GO TO SPACE

Faris, the first cosmonaut of the Syrians, was welcomed as a hero in his country after returning from space in 1987 and taught at universities in Syria for about 10 years.

Faris had taken refuge in Turkey following the popular uprising and civil war that began against the Assad regime in Syria in 2011.
