The first verdict has been announced regarding the accident on the set of the film Rust, where famous American actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for the weapons and ammunition on the film set, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of "involuntary manslaughter" last month. Gutierrez-Reed became the first person to be convicted in the case.
Prosecutors argued during the trial that Gutierrez-Reed repeatedly violated safety protocols and acted recklessly while performing her duties, leading to Hutchins' death. Gutierrez-Reed's lawyer claimed that she was being made a scapegoat for the safety failures of the film set management and other crew members. Gutierrez-Reed did not testify at the trial.
Prosecutors had requested that Gutierrez-Reed be given the maximum prison sentence, arguing that she "did not fully accept responsibility for her actions."
Gutierrez-Reed's lawyer, on the other hand, had requested that she be released on probation, arguing that his client had no prior criminal record.
BALDWIN EXPECTED TO APPEAR IN COURT IN JULY
Baldwin, who is also charged with involuntary manslaughter, is expected to appear in court in July. Baldwin, who denies the charges against him, has claimed that he did not pull the trigger of the gun.
A SETTLEMENT HAD BEEN REACHED
Following a lawsuit filed against them by Hutchins' husband, Matthew Hutchins, in October 2022, Baldwin and the film's production company reached a settlement with Hutchins' family for an undisclosed amount. Following the set accident that captured the world's attention, production of the film Rust was planned to continue this year with Matthew Hutchins joining as a producer.
IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE GUN CONTAINED LIVE AMMUNITION
Testifying after the fatal accident on set, Baldwin stated that assistant director Halls had handed him the gun and told him it was "safe." Assistant director Halls, in his testimony, said he did not know there was "live ammunition" in the gun. Thus, it was revealed that the gun in Baldwin's hand contained live ammunition.
