Player shot during football match in Ireland

Police in Ireland are searching for hunters involved in an attack after a player was shot during a rural football match.

The footballer was shot in the arm during a match played at a sports field in the village of Rear Cross in County Tipperary at 9:00 PM on Saturday evening.

An Garda Síochána (Irish Police) and emergency services arrived at the scene, treated the victim on-site, and transported him by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

According to the police, the victim's injuries are not life-threatening. Rearcross Football Club expressed their shock at the armed attack that took place "under the lights" during a Junior B team match against Ballymackey FC. In a statement, the club noted that the unnamed player was discharged from the hospital early Sunday morning.

A police spokesperson stated that the scene has been cordoned off for forensic and technical examination, and that investigators are seeking information from eyewitnesses. A specific appeal was made for individuals who were hunting in the area at the time to come forward.

Nenagh local councillor Seamie Morris reacted to the shooting by posting the following on social media:

"My God. Rear Cross was one of my favourite places to play football and then enjoy the Après Soccer in Kennedys [pub]."
