WHO IS SEVİM BELLİ?
Born in Istanbul in 1925, Belli completed her studies at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, then went to the USA, and subsequently began her specialization training in Paris. In August 1951, she met Nâzım Hikmet in Berlin during the 3rd World Festival of Youth and Students, which she attended.
MEETING NÂZIM HİKMET AND REVOLUTIONARY ACTIVITIES
Having attended the 3rd World Festival of Youth and Students held in Berlin in 1951, Belli met Nâzım Hikmet there and established a deeper connection with the socialist movement. During this period, she acted as a courier by establishing links with the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) both domestically and abroad. After returning to Turkey, she was apprehended while preparing to travel from Istanbul to Paris, a situation that triggered a major operation against the TKP.
During this operation, Belli was arrested in the wave of detentions known as the "1951 Arrests" and was imprisoned alongside TKP Central Committee members Şefik Hüsnü Değmer, Zeki Baştımar, Reşat Fuat Baraner, Mehmet Bozışık, Halil Yalçınkaya, and Mihri Belli.
