Footage of 3-year-old smoking caused outrage: Mother's unbelievable defense
In Eskişehir, a court has acquitted a mother who was put on trial after footage of her 3-year-old child smoking at a wedding sparked backlash on social media. In her defense, the mother claimed the child was not smoking, but had put a plastic object he found on the ground into his mouth.
Moments of a 3-year-old child smoking while sitting on a relative's lap at a wedding in Eskişehir were caught on camera. As the footage of the incident, which took place last year, was shared on social media, the backlash grew like an avalanche.
While an investigation was launched into the incident by the Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a verdict was announced in the case filed against the child's mother, S.B., on charges of 'supplying substances dangerous to health' and 'violation of obligations arising from family law'.
MOTHER OF 3-YEAR-OLD WHO SMOKED ACQUITTED
Following the investigation conducted by the Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the events that took place at a wedding in the Emek neighborhood of the Odunpazarı district last April, a lawsuit was filed against the mother, S.B., in the 20th Criminal Court of First Instance, seeking a prison sentence of 6 months to 1 year.
In addition to the mother, S.B., lawyers also attended the first hearing of the case.
After hearing the defenses of the defendant and the lawyers for the parties, the presiding judge acquitted the mother, S.B.
UNBELIEVABLE DEFENSE
In her defense in court, mother S.B. stated that she did not accept the charges and said the following:
“The victim children are my own children. We had gone to a wedding on the date of the incident. My 3-year-old son, E.C.B., put a plastic object he found on the ground into his mouth."
"I saw him inhaling the smoke from this plastic and took it from his hand. I did not commit the crimes I am accused of regarding my children. I am innocent.”
