The incident occurred today at around 23:00 at a construction site in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood. According to the information obtained, a tornado that emerged in the region tossed 2 containers where workers were staying at the construction site. Two workers lost their lives at the scene, and 2 others could not be saved despite all interventions while being transported to the hospital after initial treatment. It was reported that the treatment of 2 other workers is ongoing.
Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin arrived at the scene to receive information from officials and conduct inspections. Governor Şahin stated that a cell tornado formed this evening at around 23:00 in the Kepez district at a site construction area where the construction site and containers were located, tearing apart 2 containers and tossing the 6 workers inside. Governor Şahin said, "Two of our workers passed away at the scene, 2 of our workers passed away at the hospital, and 2 workers were injured. Our search efforts are currently continuing at the scene; we are verifying whether there are any other injured individuals or casualties, trying to understand this. We are facing a very interesting natural phenomenon; there were no reports of a tornado in any other part of the city, only a cell tornado appeared here, and again, we are facing a tornado that shattered only these 2 containers here. There is nothing wrong with the nearby containers. Today, our regional director of meteorology gave a presentation at the provincial coordination board meeting and said that we should be prepared for extreme events. In the evening, we were faced with such an event. I offer my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives; their identities are being determined."
Stating that a crane also toppled over in the same area due to the tornado but had no connection to the containers, Governor Şahin said, "There is no loss of life or injury under the crane; the tornado has devastated the entire site construction," he said.
It was reported that search efforts by teams are continuing due to the possibility of other workers being in the area.
