Technology use in children... Important warning from a Specialist Psychiatrist: Ban TikTok

Unlimited technology use, especially in young children, harbors great dangers. In addition to the theft of personal data, it brings risks in terms of security and health. Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Veysi Çeri issued warnings on the subject via his social media account.

Emphasizing that screen time should not exceed 2 hours, Çeri stated that TikTok, which has been frequently discussed recently, should also be banned. Çeri wrote the following:

"As a child & adolescent psychiatrist, I would like to make a few suggestions regarding technology use in children based on some situations I have encountered in recent years. The more you apply these, the safer your children will be.

Children do not have technological privacy before the age of 18. Never allow them to put passwords on their phones or computers, and stay informed about what they are doing on these platforms.

Do not allow them to bring devices with internet connections into their bedrooms. In fact, there should not even be a TV in their bedrooms.

Take care to ensure that screen time does not exceed 2 hours per day. And be a persistent follower of these time limits. The earlier you ensure this, the better it will be.

Do not let them eat meals in front of a tablet. Ban TikTok.

Increase your technology literacy. Download and learn the games, programs, and applications that their peers play and watch. Form a team and play with them. This will both help you understand them and improve your communication.

Based on current research data, for children; - Screen time for ages 0-2 should be zero, - Maximum 1 hour for ages 2-6, - Maximum 2 hours for ages 6-18.

Finally: Screens are not entirely harmful. It is worth remembering that 1-2 hours of daily use actually helps them feel better emotionally and socially. In other words, our goal should not be to remove screens and technology from their lives entirely; it should be to ensure they use them within appropriate time limits, encounter content that does not cause harm, and help them develop the habit of using them without losing our supervision."
