The PLO detail: What will Erdoğan do if Mahmoud Abbas criticizes Hamas in the Turkish Parliament?

Palestinian President Abbas will arrive in Turkey today to meet with President Tayyip Erdoğan before addressing the Turkish Parliament tomorrow.

As tensions between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority persist, there is curiosity about whether Abbas will make statements regarding Hamas while in Turkey.

In his column today, Yetkin stated, "I do not think Abbas, with his diplomatic experience and capacity that would put most diplomats to shame, will say anything that would put Erdoğan in a difficult position in front of his own people."

Yetkin expressed his belief that Abbas will attempt to win Erdoğan back during this visit.

Pointing out that Turkey needs to balance its policy toward the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, Yetkin said, "Turkey's historical, geographical, political, and conscientious responsibility toward Palestine requires that it not put all its eggs in the Hamas basket."

'IN FRONT OF HIS OWN PEOPLE..'

The relevant section of Yetkin's article is as follows:

It is reported that President Erdoğan will also watch Abbas's speech in Parliament.

A question: Will Abbas criticize Hamas openly or indirectly in his speech?

Although, I do not think Abbas, with his diplomatic experience and capacity that would put most diplomats to shame, will say anything that would put Erdoğan in a difficult position in front of his own people.

Abbas will try to win Erdoğan back.

'ERDOĞAN SHOULD ALSO RESPOND WITH AN EFFORT TO WIN ABBAS BACK'

Especially after 2006, Turkey began putting its eggs in the Hamas basket in Palestine. It was not right to declare Hamas, and only Hamas, as the Palestinian liberation movement, as if the PLO had no history or struggle. This move stirred up feelings of demagoguery in Turkey through the rising reactions against Israel's cruelty in Gaza and received praise from Hamas, but it did not increase the leverage Turkey has built regarding Palestine since the 1970s.

We are at a point where the US's expectation from Turkey regarding Palestine has been reduced to persuading Hamas to reach an agreement on Israel's terms.

It would be correct for Erdoğan to respond to Abbas's effort to win him back with an effort to win back Abbas, that is, the PLO.

Turkey's historical, geographical, political, and conscientious responsibility toward Palestine requires that it not put all its eggs in the Hamas basket.

The Abbas visit offers this opportunity and should be evaluated correctly.
