Allegations of irregularities in the Muhtars Confederation elections: Sharp reaction from CHP

The Turkey Muhtars Confederation general presidential election has sparked controversy following claims that candidates Osman Aydemir from Istanbul and Hamdi Demir from Konya withdrew their candidacies after being summoned by the Ministry of Interior. 

CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for the Ministry of Interior, Murat Bakan, made sharp statements regarding the allegations of interference in the elections.

ABUSE OF OFFICE

Murat Bakan alleged that Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya and the Vice President abused their authority, stating the following: 

“Even the general presidential election of the Turkey Muhtars Confederation has been tainted by the Palace's irregularities. The allegations regarding the Minister of Interior's intervention, in particular, require explanation. There are claims that the Minister forced presidential candidates to withdraw and exerted pressure on muhtars to ensure the election of the Istanbul Federation President. Has Ali Yerlikaya been successful in fighting criminal organizations that he is now interfering in the muhtars confederation elections?"

''EVEN THE SHREDS OF DEMOCRACY ARE BEING DESTROYED''

Claiming that the Minister of Interior and the Vice President exerted pressure to ensure a specific candidate wins the confederation elections, Bakan noted the following: 

"While the country faces serious problems such as economic crisis, social issues, rising crime rates, and the rule of law, the government's preoccupation with such local elections is a displacement of responsibility. The public expects administrators not to manipulate the will of the muhtars, but to produce solutions to these problems."

PART OF PREPARATIONS FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS 

Stating that this incident not only casts a shadow over the democratic electoral race of the muhtars but is also part of the government's preparations for general elections, Bakan said: 

 "The Palace is in a rush to determine even the president of the muhtars confederation. We evaluate this situation not only as a 'trustee appointed to the muhtars federation,' but as part of the Palace's preparation for the upcoming general elections. Such interventions by the government are an effort to destroy even the shreds of democracy. The will of the people cannot be a toy for any office."
