Taken from life by her husband: Permission denied for colleagues to attend memorial for TBMM employee Saliha Akkaş
Colleagues of Saliha Akkaş, a cleaning staff member who was murdered by her estranged husband just 100 meters from the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) where she worked, were not permitted to attend her memorial. Unions and officials remained silent.
40-year-old Saliha Akkaş, who worked as a cleaning staff member at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, was murdered by her estranged husband, Salih Akkaş. Akkaş lost her life after being stabbed in her home, located just 100 meters from the Parliament.
Her 45-year-old husband, who lived in the same house, took his own life. It was learned that in her final moments, Akkaş had gone out onto the balcony to call for help.
SILENT PROTEST FOR SALIHA AKKAŞ AT THE TBMM
On August 6, a silent protest was held at the TBMM for Akkaş. The protest was attended by female employees at the TBMM, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir, CHP Ankara Deputy Semra Dinçer, DEM Party Erzurum Deputy Meral Danış Beştaş, and several parliamentary advisors. During the protest, participants clapped to voice their reaction against the femicide.
COLLEAGUES DENIED PERMISSION
However, Akkaş's coworkers were not permitted to join the protest. It emerged that the floor supervisors for the cleaning staff had instructed Akkaş's colleagues not to participate in the demonstration.
The Öz Büro İş Union, affiliated with the Hak-İş Confederation of which Saliha Akkaş was a member, did not issue any statement following the murder of Akkaş.
