Tensions rise over debate on moving up election date: First reaction to Uçum from CHP

Chief Advisor to the President Mehmet Uçum shared his proposal regarding the upcoming general elections with the public, stating that the election date should be April 16, 2028. Uçum emphasized that he is proposing to move this date only three weeks ahead of the normal election calendar and that this is not an "early election" move. In his assessment on social media, Uçum stated, "The April 16, 2028 date we proposed for the upcoming general elections is not an 'early election' date in its political and social sense. It is merely moving the timely election forward by three weeks."

Mehmet Uçum also spoke highly of the support MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli gave to the proposal in question, saying, "The value of his supportive opinion, which contains deep meanings, is indisputable."

This move by the presidential advisor was met with a swift reaction from the opposition front. CHP İstanbul Deputy Cemal Enginyurt criticized Uçum with harsh expressions in a post he made on the social media platform X. Enginyurt said, "This broadcaster of breezes from the Palace, called Mehmet Uçum, continues to set the election date. Mehmet Uçum, do not be insolent! The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) makes the election decision. Stop trying to set the agenda. You are becoming very unpleasant."
