Üsküdar Municipality under police blockade ahead of deputy mayor election
Police teams have taken security measures since the morning hours in front of the Üsküdar Municipality building, where the deputy mayoral election is set to be repeated.
Following the decision to repeat the deputy mayoral election at Üsküdar Municipality, police teams have been deployed around the municipal building since the morning hours. The Istanbul Governor's Office had announced that it was deemed appropriate for the Üsküdar Municipal Council to convene on Saturday, September 5, at 10:00 AM to elect a deputy mayor.
The process began following the arrest of Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş. Dedetaş, who was arrested as part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into allegations of irregularities regarding building permits and occupancy permit processes at the municipality, was suspended from her duties as a temporary measure by the decision of the Ministry of Interior.
CHP WON, AKP'S OBJECTION ACCEPTED
Following this, CHP candidate Sibel Tan Çetinkaya won the deputy mayoral election held in the municipal council. However, the AKP's objection was accepted, and a repeat of the election was requested. The objection filed by Üsküdar Municipality against this decision was also rejected by the Istanbul Regional Administrative Court.
4 CHP MEMBERS SWITCHED TO AKP, 3 COUNCIL MEMBERS DETAINED BEFORE ELECTION
While the election process was ongoing, it was reported that 4 CHP municipal council members switched to the AKP, and 3 municipal council members were detained as part of a new operation. Özgür Özel also reacted to the election being held while council members were in custody.
The increase in security measures around the municipal building ahead of today's meeting indicates that the political tension regarding the deputy mayoral election has reached a new stage.
