Giant explosion on the Sun! Communication disruptions may occur in space and on Earth!

NASA has warned that a powerful explosion rated as X6.3 has occurred on the Sun and that this flare could cause communication disruptions in space and on Earth.

On February 22, 2024, a solar flare classified as X6.3 peaked at 10:34 AM Turkish time. This flare is one of the sudden, massive energy releases on the Sun. Flares are categorized into 5 classes—A, B, C, M, and X—based on their power and impact. M and X class flares are the most dangerous.

Solar flares can have negative effects on radio communications and power grids on Earth. These flares generally occur in an 11-year cycle. The X6.3 flare is the largest recorded since 2017 and ranks 27th on the historical solar flare list on Space Weather Live. The largest event on the list was rated as X40.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that the X6.3 flare could cause temporary degradation or complete loss of signal for high-frequency radio operators. However, it was stated that it does not pose a significant threat to the sunlit side of the planet or the general public during the flare.

These flares are occurring during Solar Cycle 25, which began in 2019, is expected to peak in 2025, and continue until 2030. This X6.3 flare is the largest of this cycle, but it may not hold that title for long.
