Liberty City map shelved for GTA 5 could arrive as DLC for GTA 6

The Liberty City expansion, which Rockstar Games reportedly planned for GTA 5 years ago but later shelved, could be back on the agenda for GTA 6. GTA 5 source code, which was reportedly leaked following a data breach in 2023, contains new details suggesting that the canceled package may have reached a more advanced stage than previously thought.

It has been suggested that an expanded map layout, created using Liberty City's coastline data, was found in the files, which are reported to be approximately 200 GB in size. It is claimed that this layout points to an area larger than the Liberty City in GTA 4.

WHAT DO THE LEAKS POINT TO?

According to information attributed to Ook from the World Travel modding team behind the Liberty City Preservation Project, the Liberty City project that Rockstar prepared for GTA 5 may not have been completely lost. X user TJGM suggested that this content might have been shifted to GTA 6.

The newly identified regions allegedly show that Rockstar was conducting serious work on the expansion in question. However, it is believed that the company canceled the story expansion planned for GTA 5 due to the massive success and long-term content support of GTA Online.

While GTA 6 is expected to be released on November 19, 2026, reports that GTA 6 Online could be released in 2027 have reopened the debate on this possibility. Take-Two's confirmation that GTA Online support will continue after the release of GTA 6 has led to comments that the door has not been completely closed for large-scale additional content.

However, there is no official statement from Rockstar regarding the addition of Liberty City to GTA 6. The company may choose to focus solely on Leonida, or it may consider this previously worked-on map as a future DLC project.
