A Russian satellite deployed three satellites into Earth's orbit on February 5, 2025. The release of these mysterious objects into orbit was detected by US satellites. While the nature of these objects and their intended use have not yet been determined, they have caused concern on the international agenda.
According to a report in Chip, the objects, which US officials describe as 'offensive and defensive tactics,' are believed to have the capacity to surround, track, and even target enemy spacecraft. It is alleged that beyond surveillance and intelligence gathering, these satellites could lead to direct attacks.
While international agreements strictly prohibit the placement of weapons in space, this has sparked debates regarding how well states adhere to such legal regulations. According to some experts, the current international order is insufficient to control actions taking place in space.
According to a report by Space.com, while major powers such as Russia, the US, and China maintain a secretive stance regarding their space operations, it has not yet been determined whether Russia is using these satellites for surveillance or as preparation for an attack. The US, which is making intensive efforts to decipher the purpose of these objects, continues to monitor them.
