The era of monetization begins on WhatsApp
WhatsApp is testing a paid subscription system that will allow content creators to generate income through exclusive posts. With the platform's new implementation, access to special content on certain channels will now require a subscription.
WhatsApp, one of the world's most widely used messaging services, previously provided users with the opportunity to access diverse content through its Channels feature. Now, a new revenue model for content creators and channel owners is on the agenda. WhatsApp has begun initial tests to implement a subscription system where certain channels will feature content exclusively for paid subscribers.
With the system in place, while users will continue to access standard content for free, channel owners will be able to open a portion of their posts to paid subscribers if they choose. This will both encourage content creators to remain active on the platform and allow users to evaluate subscription options to access the exclusive content they are interested in.
In the new application, which resembles Instagram's subscription system in its design, information on how many people are subscribed to a channel will also be shared transparently. This will allow users deciding on a subscription to get an idea about the channel's popularity and community.
WhatsApp's new model will not lead to any changes regarding free usage. Channels and content that are currently open to everyone will remain accessible. Paid subscriptions will be offered only as an optional choice for users who want exclusive content.
The feature, which is currently being tested with a limited group of users, will be activated globally in stages once the development process is complete. With this move, WhatsApp aims to expand its digital ecosystem and strengthen the retention of content creators on the platform.
