Flash statement from FIFA on Halil Umut Meler!

Following the 1-1 draw in the MKE Ankaragücü – Çaykur Rizespor match played in the 15th week of the Süper Lig, the home team's president, Faruk Koca, entered the pitch and punched FIFA-licensed referee Halil Umut Meler.

Following the scandalous incident, leagues in Turkey were suspended indefinitely, and Koca was arrested and sent to prison.

A statement regarding the scandal, which also caused widespread repercussions in the world press, has come from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

In his statement, Infantino noted that the attack was unacceptable, stating, "There is no place for violence in football, on or off the pitch. The events that occurred after the MKE Ankaragücü-Çaykur Rizespor match in the Süper Lig are unacceptable. Such actions have no place in our sport or society."

Saying "Without referees, there is no football," Infantino added, "Referees, players, fans, and staff must be safe and secure to enjoy the game, and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly implemented and respected at every level."
