Harsh words from Italiano after Celtic defeat

Beşiktaş were defeated 3-2 away by Scottish side Celtic in the 4th week of the UEFA Europa League. In the match played at Celtic Park in Glasgow, the black-and-whites scored twice but left the pitch without points after conceding a goal in the final stages.

With this result, Beşiktaş suffered their first defeat in the Europa League and remained on 7 points after four matches. Speaking after the match, head coach Vincenzo Italiano drew attention to the errors made, particularly in defense.

I am truly very sad. I am disappointed. We played away against a good team. But we threw away a very important opportunity.

— Vincenzo Italiano

ITALIANO'S DEFENSIVE REACTION

The Italian coach said he was satisfied with his players' general effort but that the easy chances given to the opponent determined the result. Italiano emphasized that the team needs to return to the defensive toughness they showed at the beginning of the season.

The experienced manager stated that he did not want to target anyone individually, saying, "I don't want to blame anyone, but at the beginning of the season, we were tougher and stronger in defense. Of course, you will concede chances, but these are not chances that should be gifted so easily."

Saying that it is difficult to accept conceding three goals, Italiano expressed his team's disappointment over the missed opportunity by saying, "I think we threw away 3 points. I am very angry about this."

The first half of the match ended goalless. Beşiktaş took the lead in the 53rd minute with a penalty goal from Junior Olaitan. Celtic turned the score to 2-1 with goals from Callum Osmand in the 61st minute and Camilo Durán in the 78th minute.

The black-and-whites equalized in the 85th minute with a long-range goal from Orkun Kökçü. However, Celtic took the lead again shortly after with Camilo Durán's second goal and won the match 3-2.

Beşiktaş had defeated Marseille 4-1 and Hoffenheim 3-2 away in their first three matches of the league phase, and drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace. The black-and-whites will face Hapoel Beer-Sheva on Thursday, November 26, 2026, in the 5th week of the Europa League.
