Robinho, convicted of sexual assault, arrested
Former Brazilian footballer Robinho has been arrested after it was decided that he must serve his 9-year prison sentence in his home country for his role in a gang sexual assault against a woman in Italy.
According to reports in the Brazilian press, Robinho's request to suspend his arrest until his appeal is finalized was rejected.
The 40-year-old Robinho was apprehended by federal police at his home in the city of Santos following the rejection.
Robinho was sentenced to 9 years in prison in 2017 for his involvement in the gang rape of a young woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013, while he was playing for AC Milan.
SENTENCE UPHELD
The Italian Ministry of Justice had sent an extradition request to Brazil in 2022 after Robinho's sentence was upheld.
The Superior Court of Justice of Brazil had ruled that the sentence Robinho received should also be valid in the country.
Robinho, who began his career at the Brazilian club Santos, played for Real Madrid, Manchester City, AC Milan, Guangzhou Evergrande, Atletico Mineiro, Sivasspor, and Başakşehir.
Robinho returned to Brazil in 2020—as the country does not extradite its citizens under its constitution—and transferred to Santos for a symbolic fee.
