Sergen Yalçın: It was a match we needed to win
Beşiktaş manager Sergen Yalçın stated that he is disappointed after drawing with Eyüpspor in a match they needed to win.
In the 19th week of the Trendyol Super League, Beşiktaş drew 2-2 away against Eyüpspor. Beşiktaş manager Sergen Yalçın made statements at the press conference held after the match.
"It was a game and a score we did not expect"
Stating that they played a style of football far outside their own, Yalçın said, "It was a game and a score we did not expect. I think we experienced a serious lack of concentration at the beginning of the game. We played a game outside of our game format and understanding. Although we took the lead early, it caused us difficult moments for the rest of the game. We fell behind, then we made moves to turn the game around. The most important thing to say on our behalf is that the fighting power and the two-way play were far outside our normal understanding. Sometimes you cannot win. These are normal things in football. Saving a draw after a bad game seems good for us as well," he said.
"To win, you have to run and fight"
Touching on the fact that there was a lot of negativity in the team against Eyüpspor, Sergen Yalçın said, "Sometimes there are bad games and results. These are things that are in the nature of the game. There was a lot of individual performance decline. Maybe we can carry 1-2 players, but it was difficult for us to carry 5-6 players. While talking on the sidelines, we discussed that there was a lack of concentration at the beginning of the game. It was a match we needed to win. It looked like that on paper, but football is not a game played on paper. To win, you have to run and fight. We are sad because we lost 2 points," he said.
"I hope we can fill the missing areas with 3-4 players"
Expressing that transfer planning and work are continuing, the 53-year-old manager said, "There were players we were close to signing. But sometimes you cannot get the player. Everyone is working to fill the missing areas. I hope we can fill the missing areas with 3-4 players. There were many departures. Most of these players were not in our plans. We did not suffer very significant losses. We had actually found players for center-back, left-back, central midfield, wing, and center-forward, but things fell apart at the last minute. One also has to look at the economic side of the business. Just the departures of Rafa Silva and Abraham provided the club with a 60 million Euro advantage for the future. The Beşiktaş community is in a serious period of change. We did the right things regarding departures, but we were late in filling the gaps. Whichever player we approach, figures like 25-30 million Euros come up. This is challenging. If it were summer, maybe we could move more comfortably," he added.
