Representing Turkey in the second round of the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament held in California, Zeynep Sönmez took to the court against Anna Kalinskaya, who is ranked 22nd in the world. The 23-year-old national athlete was unable to overcome her opponent, losing the first set 6-4 and the second set 7-6, resulting in a 2-0 defeat and her elimination from the tournament.

In the first round of the tournament, Sönmez had made history by defeating the host nation's McCartney Kessler with scores of 7-6 and 6-0. With this victory, Zeynep Sönmez had become the first Turkish tennis player to win a match in the Indian Wells main draw.
