Europe's regions with the highest tourist density announced: Greece's South Aegean region tops the list

The regions with the highest tourism density in the European Union have been identified. Eurostat's 2024 data showed that Greece's South Aegean region stands out by a wide margin in tourist nights per inhabitant.

In the South Aegean, which includes popular islands such as Santorini, Rhodes, and Kos, over 41.5 million nights were spent by tourists last year. In a region with a population of approximately 326 thousand, this figure corresponds to 127.2 tourist nights per person.

The Ionian Islands, which include Corfu and Zakynthos, took second place on the list. While 20.5 million nights were recorded in the region with a population of approximately 200 thousand, the number of tourist nights per inhabitant was calculated at 102.6. According to the data, no other region in the EU came close to these two levels.

DENSITY CONCENTRATED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AND ADRIATIC

In regions outside of Greece, destinations with strong summer tourism also stood out. In the province of Bolzano, known as the gateway to the Dolomites in the Italian Alps, 68.9 nights per inhabitant were recorded.

The Adriatic coast, which includes Croatian tourist cities such as Dubrovnik and Split, ranked high with 67.5 nights, while this number was 60 in Spain's Balearic Islands. The Balearics, which also include Ibiza and Mallorca, were listed among Europe's most crowded holiday centers.

Crete, Greece's largest island, also appeared in the upper part of the list. In Crete, 55.6 tourist nights per inhabitant were calculated, and the region placed sixth in terms of tourism density.

Across the EU, the picture appears more balanced. In the majority of regions, the number of nights per inhabitant remained below 15. Although this number was 14.9 in Greece's North Aegean region, the region rose to 24th place in the rankings.

At the bottom of the list were the Mazowieckie region surrounding Warsaw in Poland and the French territory of Mayotte. While 0.7 nights per inhabitant were recorded in Mazowieckie, this rate was announced as 0.5 for Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.
