Cuba plunged into darkness! 10 million people left without electricity

Millions of people in Cuba were left without electricity following a failure at the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant on October 18.

After enduring a prolonged power outage due to Tropical Storm Oscar, which made landfall on October 20, Cuba has now been struck by Hurricane Rafael.

Hurricane Rafael, which intensified to a Category 3 storm, made landfall on the Caribbean island, which has a population of 10 million.

Authorities have warned the public about potential flooding due to the hurricane, and alerts have been issued in 9 of the country's 15 provinces.

In the town of Candalaria in the Artemisa region, which was among the areas most affected by the storm, trees were uprooted by strong winds.

While more than 70,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the Artemisa and Pinar del Rio provinces, the streets of the capital, Havana, which has a population of approximately 2 million, remained empty and transportation services were suspended.

In a statement on his social media account, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that the military had been mobilized, stating, "We have tasked the National Defense Council with combating Hurricane Rafael. Measures have been taken everywhere to protect our people and material resources. We will overcome this situation, just as we have always done since the Revolution."

About three weeks after Tropical Storm Oscar, the country is facing power outages for the second time in a month as Hurricane Rafael hits.

The country's power grid collapsed due to strong winds, leaving approximately 10 million people nationwide without electricity.

Authorities have accelerated efforts to repair the infrastructure. The national energy company, Union Electrica, stated on its social media account that the system collapsed due to the severe winds.

Approximately 10 million people were left in the dark following a failure that first occurred at the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant in the city of Matanzas, Cuba, around noon on Friday, October 18.

While the capital, Havana, with a population of nearly 2 million, was completely plunged into darkness and silence, soldiers were deployed to various points in the city. Due to the power outage, residents of Havana protested against the government by banging pots and pans.

In a statement from the city's power company, it was reported that electricity had been restored to 90 percent of Havana, which had been plunged into darkness for days, as of the evening hours of October 21.
