Defense spending on the agenda at the NATO summit to be held in The Hague

Leaders of NATO member countries are gathering in The Hague, Netherlands, for a two-day summit. The summit takes place immediately following the ceasefire decision between Israel and Iran, which came after Iran's missile attack on a US airbase in Qatar in the Middle East. At the same time, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine entering its fourth year, security concerns in the region are among the main agenda items of the summit.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte aims for this meeting, which is critical for the future of the alliance, to proceed smoothly. The issue of increasing defense spending, particularly to meet the demands of US President Donald Trump, stands out at the summit.

Member countries have approved comprehensive lists containing the amounts of weapons and troops each country must provide under NATO's new commitments. The 5% target set for defense spending has been allocated such that 3.5% will go directly to military expenditures and 1.5% to related investments.

However, this target has sparked controversy within the alliance. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez opposes increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP.

Sanchez's stance is deepening disagreements among NATO members, and it is assessed that it could risk the course of the summit and the unity of the alliance. Slovakia is also displaying a similar approach, reserving the right to determine its own defense budget. It is being discussed that this situation could provide US President Trump with a pretext to withdraw from the summit.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to support the ambitious target set by NATO and commit to allocating 5% of his country's GDP to security by 2035. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also among the leaders who will be present at the summit.

The decisions to be taken at the summit are expected to shape NATO's roadmap for the coming period and the solidarity within the alliance.
