The first human case of "H5 bird flu" has been detected in Canada's British Columbia province. An official statement regarding the matter was released by the province. It was stated that the infected individual is a young person receiving treatment at a children's hospital.

The statement noted that no other cases have been detected yet and that the source of exposure is most likely an animal or a bird.

While an investigation to clarify the source of exposure is ongoing, the province's Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry stated the following:

"This is a rare event, and while this is the first H5 case detected in a person in Canada, a small number of human cases have been seen in the U.S. and elsewhere. Therefore, we are conducting a comprehensive investigation to fully understand the source of exposure here."
