Health risk identified in cosmetic products during tests in Germany

Öko-Test, one of Germany's leading consumer magazines, examined 15 different pink-toned lip glosses sold at three major cosmetic retailers. The results, published in April, showed that health risks in beauty products remain a significant issue. Titanium dioxide, a potentially harmful substance, was found in most of the products examined.

Among these products, only the Catrice brand's "Max It Up Lip Booster Extreme – 040 Glow On Me" lip gloss received a "very good" rating for not containing titanium dioxide. Offered in a 4 ml package, this product was the only option to pass the test.

Another finding that drew particular attention was that all six products labeled as "natural cosmetics" also contained titanium dioxide. Although this substance was not listed in the ingredients for some products, it was detected in the formula. Among these products is the Rival de Loop Plumping Lip Gloss, number 02, from Rossmann. It is known that this lip gloss is sold on some e-commerce sites in Turkey, though it is unclear whether it is regularly available in Rossmann Turkey stores.

Titanium dioxide is generally used as a pigment and was banned as a food additive by the European Union in 2022. Due to its potential to damage DNA, it is also considered risky in cosmetic products. This component requires special attention, especially in lip products, due to the risk of accidental ingestion.

Consumers are advised to carefully read ingredient lists when purchasing lip gloss. Titanium dioxide is usually indicated on packaging with the code CI 77891. By checking this code, safer products can be chosen.
