Iran reacts to Trump's Hormuz threat
Tehran responded to Donald Trump's statement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that targeting civilian infrastructure is a violation of international law.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reacted to US President Donald Trump's statement that Iran's infrastructure could be targeted in response to potential interference in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Baghaei claimed that the Washington administration is "trying to normalize war crimes." Stating that no order can justify the commission of war crimes, Baghaei said, "An order received from a superior authority does not eliminate the criminal responsibility of those who commit war crimes."
Baghaei argued that policies envisioning the targeting of civilian infrastructure elements, such as bridges and power plants, are contrary to international humanitarian law. Stating that such attacks constitute "reprisals" and "collective punishment," Baghaei asserted that these practices are prohibited as war crimes under both international law and US domestic law.
US President Trump had previously stated that if Iran were to interfere with the passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, US forces could launch attacks on Iran's infrastructure.
