Millions in New York head to the polls to elect their mayor

Millions of voters in New York, the largest city in the U.S., are heading to the polls for local elections. All three candidates have focused their campaigns on providing affordable housing for New Yorkers.

Three candidates are competing to lead the largest city in the U.S.: Democrat Zohran Mamdani, Independent Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Zohran Mamdani, who is leading in the polls, is a candidate to become the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor.

The election race has reached a national level as Trump has endorsed his former political rival Andrew Cuomo against Mamdani, calling on voters not to elect the left-leaning Mamdani.

Trump stated that if Mamdani, whom he labeled a "communist," wins the election, "it will be hard for me to give New York much money."

Following this threat, Mamdani announced that he would stand up to the president. Voting in New York will conclude at 05:00 TSI.
