Secret Service admission after assassination attempt on Trump: 'In the last two years...'
The New York Times (NYT) reported that requests for additional protection and resources for former US President Donald Trump over the past two years were rejected by the US Secret Service.
US Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed in a written statement to the NYT that requests for additional protection and resources for Trump had been turned down.
Stating that the Secret Service operates in a "dynamic threat environment," Guglielmi noted that the resources they can deploy to events are limited.
Guglielmi explained that in cases where the Secret Service could not provide additional resources, they requested support from local law enforcement for events Trump would attend.
Officials speaking to the NYT also noted that Trump's election campaign had requested additional security from the Secret Service over the last two years, but these requests were not met.
SECRET SERVICE FACED CRITICISM AFTER ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
The US Secret Service had been subjected to intense criticism following the assassination attempt on Trump.
As the US press questioned how a sniper could position himself 150 meters away from Trump, the question of why US Secret Service snipers did not act in time became a subject of debate.
The Secret Service, which was responsible for protecting Trump during the election rally and faced heavy criticism regarding security lapses following the assassination attempt, announced that it would support an independent investigation into the incident.
ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON DONALD TRUMP
Former US President Trump was subjected to an armed attack on July 13 while addressing supporters from a podium at a rally in the Butler area of Pennsylvania. One person attending the rally died and two were injured in the attack, and the US Secret Service announced that the attacker had been neutralized.
The FBI defined the attack as an assassination attempt and, following investigations, identified the person who carried out the attempt and was killed at the scene as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
