Statement from the US regarding national security threat

US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby has made statements regarding the "serious national security threat" raised yesterday by US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner.

During his daily press briefing, Kirby stated that the national security threat in question involves technology related to Russia's development of anti-satellite capabilities, while declining to comment on whether this system should be classified as a nuclear weapon or a nuclear capability.

Kirby said, "First of all, this is not an active, deployed capability. While Russia's pursuit of this capability is concerning, there is no immediate threat to anyone's safety. We are not talking about a weapon that can be used to attack people or cause physical destruction on Earth."

Kirby stated that the US has had general knowledge that Russia was pursuing such capabilities for "months, if not a few years."

US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner had issued a warning about a national security threat yesterday. In his statement yesterday, Turner noted that the committee had provided information regarding the "serious national security threat" to all members of Congress, stating, "I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat."
