The feud between the European Union and Musk is growing

European Commission spokesperson Regnier made a statement during the daily press briefing regarding the live broadcast on X between the co-chair and chancellor candidate of the far-right AfD party, Weidel, and American businessman Musk.

Regnier said, "We are not monitoring or reviewing the content of the broadcast. We are looking at the systems that the platforms have put in place. When you look at these systems, of course, within the framework of an ongoing proceeding, some evidence may emerge and be included in the current proceeding."

Stating that there are 150 staff members at the Commission working on the implementation of various aspects of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), and that 2 or 3 staff members were assigned to examine the systems during the live broadcast, Regnier reiterated the message, "As the Commission, we are not responsible for individual types of content."

The live broadcast in question had drawn criticism over the potential for spreading disinformation ahead of the elections to be held in Germany next month.

THE FEUD IS GROWING

Reactions toward Musk, who will also be part of the new administration of Donald Trump, the 47th President-elect of the US, began with his posts praising the far-right AfD party and targeting some European politicians.

Musk's posts supporting far-right parties in Europe drew backlash, and European leaders accused the billionaire of "interfering in elections and the internal affairs of countries."

European politicians, members of the European Parliament, and experts have called on the EU to take action against Musk's social media posts praising the far-right.

THE INVESTIGATION INTO DSA AND X

The EU's law, which came into effect last year, imposed strict rules on large digital platforms.

The EU can impose fines of up to 6 percent of their global turnover on digital platforms that violate the rules. In case of repeated violations, the operations of the digital platform in question in the EU can be terminated.

In this context, the EU launched an investigation into X in December 2023. The investigation in question evaluates X's compliance with the DSA regarding its efforts to combat illegal and harmful content.
