What caused the fire in Germany that killed two Turks? 'Every possibility must be evaluated'

Eyüp Çoban, the husband of Emine Çoban and father of Umut Can, who lost their lives in a house fire in the city of Eberswalde, north of the German capital Berlin, said he suspects the fire may have been set intentionally rather than being an accident.

Speaking to AA, Çoban said, 'This fire must be thoroughly investigated. Whether it started from the electrical wiring, where it started, and why it started must be investigated. My question is: why did the barber shop on the ground floor burn, but the kebab shop next to it did not? May God not give anyone the pain of losing a child.'

Çoban stated that the fire broke out around 23:00 on Saturday night and added the following:

'I was in Berlin and was returning home. I got off at the train station in Eberswalde and was waiting for the bus, but since it was late, I decided to walk home. A friend called me on the way and said there was a fire at the house. I ran all the way there and wanted to enter the house, but the police and fire department wouldn't let me. I gave them my children's names, but their names were not on the list of those rescued.'

Eyüp Çoban's uncle, Adil Çoban, who is from Urfa, noted that he was informed of the incident by phone around 04:00 in the morning, saying, 'When we arrived, the cooling operations of the building were still ongoing. They absolutely did not let us inside. We are very sad.'

Stating that the building was made of wood and the barber shop was under renovation, Adil Çoban said that whether the fire was caused by a problem with the wiring would be determined after the investigations are completed.

Explaining that the fire department found Emine Çoban and her son Umut in each other's arms while trying to go downstairs, Adil Çoban stated that he believes the matter will be clarified.

Noting that Turkish, Ukrainian, and Azerbaijani families lived in the building and that the building owner is also Turkish, Adil Çoban said, 'We should not be prejudiced, but every possibility must be evaluated.'

It was learned that the bodies are planned to be sent to Turkey for burial after the autopsy procedures are completed.
