The mucilage nightmare had reappeared in the Marmara: Mucilage Board decides to convene

Mucilage had been detected off the coast of the Marmaraereğlisi district of Tekirdağ and in the Gebze Eskihisar region of the Gulf of İzmit.

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change announced that the Mucilage Science and Technical Board, established within the scope of the Marmara Sea Action Plan, will meet on Wednesday.

According to the statement made by the Ministry, following the emergence of mucilage in the Sea of Marmara in 2021, the Ministry prepared the 22-article "Marmara Sea Action Plan" and the "2021-2024 Marmara Sea Integrated Strategic Plan."

In this context, the Mucilage Science and Technical Board, which was formed to reduce pollution in the Marmara and carry out monitoring efforts, has taken action again following recent reports regarding mucilage formation in the Sea of Marmara. 

The Mucilage Science and Technical Board will meet to evaluate the current situation and plan the steps to be taken, considering the possibility of similar environmental problems recurring in the Sea of Marmara, with the participation of academics in the field and relevant units of the Ministry.

The consultation meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Fatma Varank, will be held in Ankara on Wednesday, December 25.

The meeting will be attended by the President of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), as well as officials from the Union of Marmara Municipalities and the Marmara Research Center, and members of the scientific board and academics with relevant studies from Bursa Technical University, Bursa Uludağ University, Istanbul Technical University, Gebze Technical University, Istanbul University, Boğaziçi University, Middle East Technical University, Piri Reis University, Yıldız Technical University, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, and Kocaeli University.
