NASA announces: Earth is not prepared for an asteroid impact
According to an official document released by NASA and the US government, Earth remains vulnerable to a potential asteroid impact, even with 14 years of advance warning. Although there is no known significant asteroid impact threat in the foreseeable future, a biennial event assessed the ability of top-level experts to prepare for such an impact.
NASA has announced that humanity and the modern world are completely vulnerable to asteroid impacts, similar to the one that wiped out the dinosaurs in the past.
According to a simulation conducted by the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, humanity is currently defenseless against an asteroid striking Earth.
The report states that even with 14 years of advance warning, Earth has limited preparedness to rapidly implement the necessary space missions to defend itself against a devastating asteroid impact.
Although there is no known significant asteroid impact threat in the foreseeable future, a biennial event assessed the ability of top-level experts to prepare for such an impact.
'REMAINS UNCERTAIN'
The report stated, "The decision-making process for space missions in an asteroid threat scenario remains uncertain. This process is not sufficiently defined in the US or at the international level."
During the exercise, experts evaluated potential national and global responses to a hypothetical scenario in which there is a 72 percent probability of a previously undetected asteroid striking Earth within approximately 14 years.
BETWEEN 100 AND 320 METERS
Within the scope of the exercise, asteroid sizes ranged from 60 to 800 meters, with the most likely asteroid being between 100 and 320 meters.
According to the study, the probability of the impact affecting no one is 45 percent, the probability of affecting more than a thousand people is 47 percent, the probability of affecting 100 thousand people is 28 percent, the probability of affecting more than 1 million people is 8 percent, and the probability of affecting 10 million people is 0.04 percent.
The report notes that a space mission carried out over a 14-year period could face challenges.
