Two female journalists who reported on Mahsa Amini's death sentenced to prison in Iran

In Iran, two journalists who announced to the public the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the morality police on the grounds that her attire was inappropriate, have been sentenced to 6 and 7 years in prison.

The Mizan Justice Agency, which publishes online, announced that 36-year-old journalist Elaheh Mohammadi, who was accused of 'collaborating with the US and participating in a conspiracy against state security', was sentenced to 6 years in prison.

According to euronewsTurkish, photojournalist 31-year-old Niloofar Hamedi was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the same charges.

The trials of the two female journalists, who have been held in prison in Tehran since September of last year, began in May.

THE UPRISING IN IRAN FOLLOWING AMINI'S DEATH

Mahsa Amini was detained by the Iranian morality police on September 16, 2022, on the grounds that her attire was inappropriate, and she lost her life while in custody.

Amini's death while under police supervision caused millions of people to take to the streets across the country, and Iranian security forces suppressed the protests using force.

The actions, which turned into an uprising in a sense, were interpreted as one of the greatest challenges Iranian authorities have faced since the 1979 revolution.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), based in Paris, announced that 79 journalists have been detained within a year and that 12 are currently in prison.

This year, the Sakharov Prize, awarded annually by the European Parliament in the field of human rights and freedom of thought, was awarded to Mahsa Amini, who lost her life in Iran last year, and the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran.
